A gazelle beneath a tree on one side and an elephant’s head over a map of West Africa on the other: this is the 2003 token inscribed «1500 CFA» and «EMISSION MALIENNE», issued in the name of the West African Development Institute (IDAO).
It was never legal tender. The reverse reads «EMISSION MONETAIRE DE L’INSTITUT DE DEVELOPPEMENT DE L’AFRIQUE DE L’OUEST» with a notional unit «1 AFRICA», and catalogues classify such pieces as fantasy coins that never circulated in Mali. The same IDAO brand produced «issues» for other countries of the region, such as Benin, with a buffalo and birds.
It is a curious example of African exonumia and a fitting piece for a theme collection of antelopes and elephants. Grade UNC: no signs of circulation.
Other numismatic items from the same country or on the same theme are in the VPcoins catalogue.
